| Has there been a minutes silence for every ex-Leeds player who has passed away? Prematurely, or otherwise?
If the answer to that question is NO, then why should Mick Shaw be considered an exception?

| I didn't even know he'd died until I stumbled upon an article in the YEP yesterday. What happened?

Probably not a popular opinion, but I agree with this.

| Maybe i had a bit more sentiment because he died so young but if you have appeared for leeds a wore the shirt why should it make a difference if you were a legend or not , you played for us and we should as supportes and club show our respect , may be that should be the policy going forward

Probably not a popular opinion, but popular opinion in general needs to get a grip. As another poster has already alluded to, minutes silences in this context are reserved for legends of the club or for someone who has made a major and significant contribution to the game.
Yes, it's sad that an ex-player has died at such a relatively young age. I'm just not convinced it's appropriate to be organising a minutes silence on this occasion. We run the risk of watering down the importance of duly-earned commemorations as these minutes silence become more commonplace and lose their meaning. What I will say is that it would have been more appropriate in context having a minutes silence at Headingley for Mick Shaw than it was for those soldiers killed in Afghanistan recently.

And this is why I thought there should have been. We've had minutes' silence for people who have never played for us. What's the criteria? If an ex player doesn't merit it but, for example, Jayne Tomlinson does then I am confused.

I'm not confused. I believe minutes silences in the context of Headingley are reserved for special occasions to commemorate legends of the club or game (though I appreciate that's a subjective assessment) but I'm sure you'll agree with me that players like John Holmes and Roy Powell do qualify. No offence intended to Mick Shaw but I don't think he qualifies. The same can be said for other ex-players who have passed away who have not been commemorated with a minutes silence at a Headingley fixture.
In the context of Headingley, a minutes silence for Jane Tomlinson was also inappropriate IMO. Just because we've witnessed a few inappropriate commemorations which were out of context doesn't mean a more contextually appropriate one should be given the go ahead for that reason alone. Let's just dispense with the inappropriate ones full stop and divert this post-Diana, faux-traumatic, commemorative celebrity tragedy bollox to where it ought to be commemorated instead.
I once recall being at Headingley watching cricket and there was a minutes silence for Richard Whiteley during the tea interval on the basis that he was a proud Yorkshireman who embodied everything that was great about Yorkshire! I thought that was inappropriate given the context... what did he have to do with Yorkshire Cricket? My guess is that he embodied everything Yorkshire Tory, hence the association with Yorkshire Cricket. And yes, of course I ignored it and went for a leak.

Matthew Syed did a cracking piece in the times a couple of weeks ago along similar lines, about people 'out grieving' each other, how the gestures by clubs for Gary Speed seemed to get bigger and bigger, football clubs were judged on their twitter responses (or lack of) to the Muamba situation etc, a bit flowery in places, i would link to it but it's behind rupert's pay wall, and i had best not do a full C&P
